About MOA

MOA Architecture LLC, is a full-service architecture firm with offices in Portland and Corvallis, Oregon. We are dedicated to finding solutions that enhance and enrich the lives of our clients, while respecting and enhancing the environment. We believe that good design matters and that through thoughtful response to the natural and built environment and to our clients desires we can achieve meaningful and timeless architecture.

MOA was founded in 2005 by David Horning and William Ryals, who had been collaborating on projects for a number of years. Most recently MOA has acquired a new office building on SE Hawthorne, which is being renovated into a collaborative design studio.

David Horning

Partner, Founder

Oregon native David Horning founded MOA architecture with Bill Ryals in 2005. David has acquired a reputation for developing simple, straightforward design solutions that respond to the northwest vernacular. Prior to founding MOA, David received his architecture degree from the University of Oregon in 1992 and worked for Lisa Bailey architects in Corvallis. In 1997 he went into private practice focusing on a mix of residential and commercial projects.  In 2007 he relocated to Portland and opened a Portland office. His experience includes work in restaurant and hospitality, high-end single-family residences, multi-family housing, mixed-use retail, industrial design, and recently work for the emerging marijuana industry.

William Ryals

William Ryals has practiced architecture for 35 years on projects as diverse as the Portland International Airport and Christ Church in Hillsboro, Oregon. He has specialized in Commercial and Industrial work, but has substantial experience in hospitality, housing, and residential construction. He has won several awards for design and construction excellence.

Bill received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon in 1980. He then went to work for Rasmussen Ingle Anderson in San Francisco. In 1987, Bill took a position with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership in Portland, Oregon. Since 1990, he has been designing buildings through his private practice in Salem, Oregon and in collaboration with David Horning as a partner in MOA.

Bill is licensed in the states of Oregon, Washington, and California.
